North Carolina Forest Service Pilot David T. Newman and Crew Chief Michael R. Fossett who died September 7, 2000, when their Huey UN-1H helicopter crashed near the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville, NC. They were enroute to a training/education field day. The crash site was located about a mile south and upslope of milepost 441 on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the 4,400‐foot level of the Pinnacle Ridge in the Great Balsam Mountains.
