Lieutenant Mathis, a former Dallas fire chief, was responding to a motor vehicle/pedestrian accident on his privately owned vehicle (motorcycle). While enroute, he was involved in a separate motor vehicle accident where he sustained fatal injuries. A 1998 Ford pickup in the 1800 block of Jenkins Road crossed into the oncoming lane and hit his 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
