On December 26, 1947, a fire occurred at the Levon Theater in Weldon. While working in the projection room shortly before the matinee show, Forrest Rowe Jr. discovered the blaze at around 2:00 in the afternoon. He saw the fire flare behind the curtain on stage. Rowe turned in the alarm and left with the janitor, the only other person in the theater. The flames consumed the building along with part of an adjacent building that housed Ellis Cleaners and Dyers.
