On June 10, 1931, a major fire occurred in New Bern along the Neuse River that destroyed a gasoline launch, two barges, a tugboat, and a storage warehouse along with their contents. The blaze also damaged a freight car and burned a launch. Two firemen and a watchman were slightly injured during the fire.
