A firefighter was killed Monday during a search for a man who went missing on Lake Norman over the weekend. Two other divers were also injured.

Officials have not said exactly what happened during the search, but confirmed that 28-year-old firefighter Bradley Long, who went into the water earlier Monday searching for a missing 29-year-old man, was killed.

Long, who worked at the Newton Fire Department, was a volunteer with Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue. He was working with Sherrills Ford during the search.

Rescue crews have been searching the lake since Sunday afternoon. Officials said the missing swimmer jumped off a boat Sunday with two other people. The boat wasn’t anchored and started to float away. The three tried to swim and catch up with the boat, but the missing man wasn’t able to make it back to the boat.

After suspending the search around 9:30 Sunday evening due to darkness, crews started searching again 8:30 Monday morning.

The names of the divers injured and their conditions have not been released, but officials said they are also from Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue. Officials said they were responsive when they were taken to the hospital.

The search for the missing man was suspended once Long went missing in the water. Officials confirmed the body of the missing man was recovered along with Long.

Needs
The families greatest need right now is gift cards. Gas cards, restaurant cards, or WalMart/Kmart, or Visa/MasterCard gift cards. Monetary donations are also appreciated.

As most know, Brad McCoy, 36, of Nantahala was killed in the line of duty while attempting to rescue his family members when his own home caught fire last Thursday night. Brad’s 9 year old daughter, Daphne, was immediately flow to Augusta Burn Center with 80% of her body burnt. She is currently still in the burn unit and will be for some time to come. Brad’s wife, Amanda, was admitted to Augusta later Friday during the day, but has been since released following treatment for minor burns. Brad’s 7 year old son, Cole, thankfully escaped without physical injury.

The family did not have homeowners insurance and does not have health insurance, as they immigrated from Europe and the system there called “ myehic” is vastly different. Any form of donation is more than greatly appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:
Saturday, November 29, 10am at Nantahala School. Visitation with funeral to follow at the school. Address for the school is 213 Windingstairs Road Topton, NC.

Burial will be held at the Briartown Baptist Church. Address is 611 Briartown Church Road Topton, NC.

Please, we are requesting that people carpool if they can. We are also requesting that no large apparatus be brought due to extremely limited parking. Chiefs vehicles or small vehicles are welcome.
